Career Decision Time: Listen to Steve Job’s Commencement AddressWhen it’s time to make your career decisions near graduation time, it would behoove you to listen to Steve Job’s Commencement Address first.

Many of you college seniors will be graduating in a couple of months.  Everybody is asking you, “Well, what are you going to do with your life?”

When they ask this, they really mean your career.  But it’s more dramatic.  Life.

Your whole life is at stake.  If you don’t decide now, you’re finished.

And everyone will give you advice on what to do!  You’ll buy copies of What Color Is Your Parachute? and Knock ’em Dead: The Ultimate Job Search Guide!

All of the books that you are going to read are filled with probing questions that purport to lead you to your ideal career choice.

This rarely works.  These books are pulling you somewhere and making you think that you are going willingly.

Discovering what you love to do is not in a book.  It’s not here on this web page.  It’s inside of you.

Find it.  Pursue it.

Steve Jobs has a great quote in his Stanford commencement address (video below).  He says that you “can’t connect the dots looking forward, only looking backwards.”

You have to have trust…trust that the pursuit of your passions will lead to welcome, rewarding destinations.

And it will.

Thanks for this. I’ve been stressin. Everyone wants me to be an accountant…”it’s secure” they say. Well, I may be good at it, but I hate it. I love music…and I don’t know how I’ll pursue it, but I’ll “connect the dots” in the future. Go with what you love!
