This list of Top Movie Rentals was compiled for you on Thursday July 30, 2015.
The Expendables 3 [HD], directed by Patrick Hughes, featuring Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham, holds spot #1 on our list of top online movie rentals today. Should it be in this spot? Some think so, others say no. Here is the latest review:
In a movie review on August 23, 2014 entitled “How hard can it be to kill ten men? Do you think you can even just wound a couple?”, H. Bala “Me Too Can Read” wrote, “We all know The Expendables franchise doubles as a rest home for 1980’s action movie geezers. In between shooting scenes, these creaky hombres are probably either playing a game of mahjong, slurping soup, or slapping Salonpas relief patches on each other. I will say that I had a shockingly good time watching The Expendables 3, on the strength of three very lively performances. Is it even worth it to mention the plot? It’s about how his den mother instincts get the better of CIA contractor Barney Ross (Stallone). After the latest harrowing mission, Barney has one of those quiet freak-outs about how his team is old and past their prime and, at this stage, pretty much just tempting fate. He retires his old-ass crew and goes to assemble a much younger, more tech-savvy bunch, his junior Expendables. They’re just the sort of whippersnapper world-beaters that would scoff at one of Ross’ tactics: “THAT would be a good plan, if it was still 1985.”Mel Gibson is the…”

Transformers: Age of Extinction [HD], directed by Michael Bay, featuring Mark Wahlberg and Stanley Tucci, enjoys a ranking of #2 and this week is being voted up as one of the top movie rentals. Let’s see what others had to say:
In a movie review on September 20, 2014 entitled This review is probably going to be laughed at, but I don’t care., joshua2415 wrote, “I love all the transformers movies, just because they’re entertaining.I know they’re not critically acclaimed for the acting or the heart-wrenching story like say a Terms of Endearment, but they’re not supposed to be.They’re action, they’re visually spectacular, and very fun! It’s escapism at it’s best.Watching these movies with a nice surround system is a must. The explosions, the sounds of the transforming, all of it is a much better experience with surround and a good subwoofer!I can do without 2 things in the movies…the eye candy that is the chicks in short shorts! To me, it just doesn’t add to the movie.I guess because I’m not a adolescent teenage boy.Secondly, is the language.it seems like all sequels, things are pushed further each time another one is made. There was more profanity in this one than the others. It too doesn’t add to the movie. My 4 year old son loves Transformers, too and I don’t want him picking up the language.I know one day he will be…”

In a movie review on June 19, 2015 entitled Awkward, funny, refreshing – an instant connection!, TM massage wrote, “Had an instant connection to the characters. The series, interestingly, is created and written by the two stars – Rob Delaney, who plays Rob, and Sharon Horgan, who plays Sharon. It is witty, funny, refreshing, awkward all at the same time. The characters are honest and insightful, and I was laughing all the way through every episode! It is too bad these episodes are only 25 minutes, because this series is a winner.Well acted, you really do believe these are two strangers who ended up pregnant after a week long one night stand, or as Rob puts it “I’m not a stranger, more of a familiar acquaintance”.They are truly ordinary people in an awkward situation amid all the strange friendships that get even stranger when mixed with both UK (British and Irish) and US perspectives.I love the dialog…here are a few examples…In regards to having a baby: “We could do this and not f* up the kid too horribly”Regarding birth: “You see that little…”

In a movie review on October 27, 2014 entitled Downton 1924, Brett H wrote, “This year’s Downton Abbey treat takes us to 1924 andis set against the background of the UK’s first socialist government having just been elected and Lord Grantham rightly suspects that they have no sympathy for him and his ilk. Many of the story lines of Series 4 and earlier are immediately picked up and Downton certainly hits the ground running. The recurring theme of Series 5 is romance – past romance, present romance and the promise of future romance. There is plenty of it around, and sometimes in quite unexpected quarters, but I will not expand further on this theme as I certainly would not want to spoil the surprises for anybody! However, although romantic relationships are probably the dominant ingredient this time round there are plenty of other dramatic and unexpected developments to entertain. The incomparable Maggie Smith continues to dominate whenever she appears, her caustic and witty comments superbly delivered. The good news is that she makes…”

In a movie review on August 16, 2014 entitled Tension filled spy thriller.Phillip Seymour Hoffman at his best., M. Oleson wrote, “Theatrical review. There may be spoilers. In one of his last performances, Philip Seymour Hoffman, shows off his mastery of the acting craft as Gunther Bachmann, the leader of a small spy unit of the German government.Assigned to Hamburg where the 9/11 terrorists hatched their plot against the United States, Bachman and his small squad are charged specifically with watching for evil doers within the Muslim community. We see Issa Karpov (Grigoriy Dobrygin) slip into the country but he is soon identified as a possible Islamic extremist coming from Chechenia by way of Turkey.Rather than pick him up, Bachmann allows him to “walk” as he puts it.Followed all the time, Issa finds refuge with a Turkish family, then obtains legal help from a human rights lawyer (Rachel McAdams). Is he a terrorist or not?He is found to be the son of a deceased Russian general. The general, it seems left a large fortune for the son with a bank now run by Tommy Brue (Willem…”

Slow West [HD], directed by John Maclean, featuring Kodi Smit-McPhee and Michael Fassbender, enjoys a ranking of #7 and this week is being voted up as one of the top movie rentals. Let’s see what others had to say:
In a movie review on May 28, 2015 entitled The Title is Perfect, TheRCA88 wrote, “I enjoyed this movie. The title says it all, it is a slow movie about the west. The first hour does a great job at setting up the beautiful/brutal third act, but you have to be very patient. The acting is great, and the script is very minimal and tight. The cinematography is beautiful, and truly shows us the west. If you like westerns and indie films, this is a perfect blend of the two.0″

In a movie review on November 21, 2012 entitled Literary lovers delight, my wife and I enjoyed it on the screen, Harold Wolf “Doc” wrote, “Already my wife wants another viewing. I’m prone to agree. We’re 2 book addicts, drama film lovers, and this film’s depth is not often seen in big screen theater. It’s about sacrificing integrity for fame and money. It details how an unscrupulous decision can implode and create collateral emotional damage to cherished people. The Words is presented in storyline layers, woven together like literature, not easily tracked by those simply looking at action, FX, and adventure. THE WORDS is intellectual with a capital WOW.Hammond (Dennis Quaid) writes a story about an ambitious, but not stellar, young writer Rory (Bradley Cooper) who has ripped-off an unpublished manuscript written by an old man (Jeremy Irons) over 60 years earlier. If you don’t understand `plagiarism’, stop here and don’t bother viewing. It’s the entire plot in one word. The story progresses in the same fashion as a bestseller novel, layers woven together, scenes jumping from 2012 to 1940 Paris, and back, from…”

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire [HD], directed by Francis Lawrence, featuring Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson, holds spot #9 on our list of top online movie rentals today. Should it be in this spot? Some think so, others say no. Here is the latest review:
In a movie review on November 22, 2013 entitled An Incredibly Faithful, Mind-blowing Adaptation, Amazon Customer wrote, “Wow. Just, wow. I went to see Catching Fire last night after a year and a half long wait and I can honestly say, it was 100% worth it. Please go see this movie. You will not be disappointed. The director, Francis Lawrence, did a fantastic job expanding the world of Panem while keeping true to the tone set by the first movie. The first half of the movie, the victory tour and events leading up to the Quarter Quell, may feel a little bit rushed, but all the important details are there. The arena is colossal, so much better on screen than in my mind. The music, which I paid particular attention to since I loved the first film’s score, was moving and fit perfectly in every scene. For book fans, there are a few minor details left out, but the amount of content taken directly from the book is amazing. Much of the dialogue (although not all) is taken straight from the book, word-for-word. This was probably my favorite part of the whole movie. And I need not add that the casting was phenomenal…”

In a movie review on April 27, 2008 entitled Michael Jackson Was Wrong, It Does Matter if The Mist is Black or White. (dvd features below), Mike Liddell wrote, “On the two disc edition of The Mist, on disc 2 there is a glorious Black and White version of the film, with an introduction by the director Frank Darabont.Darabont says he originally wanted The Mist to be in B&W and be a throwback to the 50’s and 60’s horror movies such as Night of the Living Dead, which I felt it had a lot in common with.Darabont says this can be considered his director’s cut.I knew he directed two other King favorites The Shawshank Redemption (Two-Disc Special Edition) and The Green Mile, but I didn’t realize his other…”
