Her lead-up to this fight was uncharacteristic. She manufactured malevolence towards her opponent Holly Holm where none was really warranted. I sensed fear.
Then I watched some of Holly Holm’s fights and saw her leg kick in action and I knew why.
Ronda did not have a lot of confidence going into this fight. Her bravado was masking her fear.
Three things happened in the fight that signaled the imminent downfall. First, Holly had a left hand free for all on Ronda’s face, virtually landing shots at will. Second, Ronda took Holly to the ground in her signature move and Holly easily escaped. Third, Ronda swung at Holly, completely missed, and nearly fell over.
Then — BOOM! The leg kick that ended it all!
Ronda was outclassed in this fight, both in and outside of the ring. She was a victim of her own hubris much like Lennox Lewis in his first fight against Haseem Rahman.
Lennox returned trimumphant in the rematch. The question now is: Can Ronda?
