In this review of The Guest List by Lucy Foley, I will tell you who I would recommend this book to and who I wouldn’t. Who knows … these recommendations might say more about you than they do about the book.
As I do in all my book reviews, let’s first delve into the reason I chose to read this book.
How much time does it take you to read your average 300 page book? 10 hours? 20 hours? I would say on average it takes most of us about a week or two to get through a book — that’s a good chunk of time out of our busy lives so let’s make sure we choose wisely.
I was guided to this book, like many of us are, by Amazon recommendations. I got to hand it to their algorithm because it does a pretty good job determining our likes. Aside from the scary AI implications of this — that computers know us better than we know ourselves! — we must applaud the end results that generally lead us to a book of our liking.
So the recommendations led me to the Amazon page for The Guest List by Lucy Foley. There, I saw a quote by the author of The Silent Patient, another book I really enjoyed.
I also noticed that more than 50,000 people have given this book an average of 4 and a half stars. But, perhaps most importantly, this book carries a description and promise of being ‘deliciously wicked’.
I’ve never engaged in a deliciously wicked endeavor that did not leave me entirely satisfied and perhaps feeling a bit criminal.
So, Onward ho I say — let’s see if this book lives up to the promise!
The Guest List by Lucy Foley: Is it Worth Your Time?

I’m just here to give you an overview and point you in one direction or another as to whether The Guest List by Lucy Foley may be to your liking.
If I tell you that it’s a book about a wedding, you probably won’t be too intrigued. If I tell you that a participant in the wedding is murdered at the wedding, perhaps your level of intrigue will increase somewhat. And, if I tell you that there are many people incentivized to commit this murder and you will not be able to figure out who it is, you might be as motivated to go out and read The Guest List as the guests were to see this person dead.
The book addresses so many levels of humanity — jealousy, passion, sibling rivalries, competitive friendships, May–December relationships — and the list goes on.
And the best part?
This cursory but fundamental evaluation of humanity is wrapped up in — dare I say it — a deliciously wicked mystery.
Who died? Who did it?
There are people in this world who don’t like anything and, since they don’t like anything, they won’t like this book.
