Political Speeches Last Night: John McCain, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama

Richard Cummings

political speechesObservations on the Political Speeches Last Night [June 2008]: John McCain is a Kinda Creepy, Hillary is Finally Hillary, and  Barack is Just Plain Cool!

John McCain should not have listened to the advice he received last night:  SMILE!

It was unnatural.  There were moments when it seemed the teleprompter must have parenthetically included:  Smile right NOW and Look At The Camera.  The smile was forced out like a painful delivery and somewhat sinister.

What Happens in Vegas…Movie Review

Richard Cummings

what-happen-in-vegas-movie-reviewOn the way to the theatre, I said to my girl friend, “You know one reason why I want to see What Happens in Vegas…I want to see if Cameron Diaz still has IT.”

I remember the first time I saw her…it was in the movie The Mask.  When she appeared onscreen, I was mesmerized.  How could someone have such amazing blue eyes and a smile that inviting?  I was taken aback not only by her beauty but her charisma and playfulness, which was later on full exhibit in There’s Something About Mary.

Michel de Montaigne: A Review of The Essays

Richard Cummings

Michel-de-Montaigne-essays-reviewIf you’ve never been exposed to the timeless ideas of Michel de Montaigne, his essays will leave you with a better understanding of the world and yourself.

In a university philosophy class , I was exposed to the essays of Michel de Montainge.  He wrote these essays some 400 years ago.  Their timeless nature amazes me.  For many situations in today’s world, there is a quote from these works that is applicable:

Bus #19 in San Francisco

Richard Cummings

bus-19-san-franciscoIf you want to feel as though you’ve hit a new low in life, ride bus #19 in San Francisco.

Growing up in the Midwest, you never ride the bus. If you do, you need a life change. Unless you’re taking the bus to school, in which case, you’re exempt from such evaluation because your life is great. Students have it so easy. If you’re a student right now, I am sorry that you will not realize this until you’re out of school. Life’s just like that.

How to Enjoy a Movie Twice [or a Mr. Brooks Movie Review]

Richard Cummings

mr-brooks-movie-reviewMy friend “rented” the movie Mr. Brooks last night. The dance clubs were a-calling so we were only able to see the first 15 minutes. We will watch it later today.

I have seen the movie Mr. Brooks…and I haven’t.

I did see it. About 6 months ago, Mr. Brooks was one of the first movies that I saw when I arrived in Uruguay. They promoted it very differently here and made the movie seem much better than the promotion I had seen in the USA.

No Country for Old Men: Movie Review

Richard Cummings

no-country-for-old-men-the-movieAfter seeing No Country For Old Men, I was left with this feeling: huh? This movie won the Oscar for best picture?

I saw the movie in Uruguay. Typically, they show English movies in English with Spanish subtitles. I like this. A dubbed movie (which they do on television here) is simply irritating.

A One Day Trip to Colonia, Uruguay

Richard Cummings

visit-colonio-uruguayMy Uruguayan friend Vicky and I took a trip to Colonia, Uruguay last week.

Colonia is town situated along the border between Argentina and Uruguay.  Most folks pass through here on their short journey to Buenos Aires (the quick boat gets you there in just an hour).  It’s well worth it to take the time to visit Colonia rather than just passing through.

Colonia is a strong mix of Spanish and Portuguese history.  The two empires fought endlessly over Colonia like she was a woman neither could live without.

Ten Things Every New Blogger Must Know

Richard Cummings

Initially, it seems like such an easy idea.

“I have ideas and I want to share them.  I’m going to setup up a blog and everyone will want to read what I have to say.  Maybe I’ll even make money!”  It’s not that easy.

Here are ten things that every new blogger must know:

New Bloggers: Three WordPress Forum Rules You Must Know

Richard Cummings

First off, I want to send a big thank you to all of those people on the WordPress forums who have helped me and helped others.  As someone relatively new to blogging, your help has been indispensable.

(Note: This article was originally written back in March of 2008. But these rules of eitquette transcend time so I’m leaving them here to spread WordPress goodwill.)

Did John Edwards Mean What I think He Meant?

Richard Cummings

When someone has no good reason to say something, they might be saying more than you think.

As I got to thinking who would win the 2008 November elections (Barack, Hillary, McCain) today, I thought of the words John Edwards spoke to Wolf Blitzer while he was still in the race…”I am the most electable of the three of us in the general election.” At the time, John Edwards trailed by wide margins in all of the polls and seemed to have no justification for saying this. Perhaps, this was just politics as usual. Perhaps.

Building Blog Traffic: A Cautionary Tale

Richard Cummings

I don’t always treat myself like I treat my clients.  With my clients, I always use a measured, methodical approach.  When it’s just me, sometimes I just jump right into the fray.

[NOTE: I wrote this post back in 2008 when I had just started out. For a new blogger, the thought process is as applicable today as it was back then.]

Letter to George Bush Before the War

President Bush/Whitehouse:

I hope that this email falls into the hands of someone with authority.

I am a 34 year old business owner originally from St. Louis, Mo. and now living in San Francisco, CA.  I have never emailed the government and my participation in government has always been limited to voting 4 times a year for president.
